Happy Mail From Lizzie Mary Cullen

I wanted to share this lovely gift sent to me by the one and only Lizzie Mary Cullen, artist creator of my original colouring book ‘The Magical City’ along with ‘The Magical Christmas’ which I also own and expecting the release a later this year of her latest book ‘The Magical Journey’.  Lizzie was down here in Australia a short while ago on her way around the world. 🙂  Sadly I didn’t get to meet her as she  was on the other side of the country… Australia is a BIG country but maybe next time.  In any case while she was here she mailed off these wonderful gifts to me.  She sent me a brand new autographed copy of The Magical City along with three large post cards featuring her heavily detailed work.  And she sent the ORIGINAL line art of the picture of the Indian Pacific Railway which will feature in ‘The Magical Journey’!  Oh boy… I think I squealed a little bit when I saw this picture.

Indian Pacific Railway. i thought it was a print copy when I first saw it. I’m going to take it down to a picture framer I trust to see about removing the wrinkles (bad Australia Post!) and to get it framed.

I can’t wait to colour this picture when the book becomes available.  Thank you Lizzie! 🙂

You can pre order your copy of Lizzie’s latest book ‘The Magical Journey’ here at The Book Depository… free shipping world wide. :)… right here:

That’s so cool! AND an honor too. Are you going to color the original artwork or just frame it as it is? I can’t wait to see what you do with her new book. Congratulations, Peta! This has happened because of your talents & your generosity in sharing your talent! Best wishes from Phyllis in Mississippi

How amazing – I am so happy for you. You have really brought her work to life for me, and because of you, I purchased the Magical City, I would not have bought it if I had not have seen your posts, because you’re such an amazing artist. I am really thrilled that she obviously also values you and the wonder you bring when you wave your colour magic wand over her beautiful line drawings.

    Hi Peta,

What a treasure! Threaten your framer with bodily injury if anything should happen to that.

The Magical Journey still only shows up as currently unavailable and out of print on Amazon US. It’s good to have another source, thank you.

Bon Voyage is listed as not yet released, making me reluctant to pre-order.

    Hi again Peta,

Completely off the topic of your great happy mail. I feel compelled to color every available piece of Magical City but the inside of that slick cover has me hesitating. What would you try on it?

That’s a thought. I’m not sure. I think you would have to open up the back cover and test a few things carefully against the spine to see what works. My guess is that pencils would perform poorly but i could be wrong. Markers colours may look washed out and prone to blotching. Not sure about alcohol markers. they may still bleed even through this thickness. … okay back. I just did a really quick test on the back page of my book. pencils were terrible as there is no tooth to grab the pigment. It would look very washed out in pencil. Inktense pencils were difficult, again because of the lack of tooth, they were difficult to manage. My best results were with my Tombow water based markers. The slick paper acts quite a bit like proper marker paper which draftsmen use for concept pictures of houses and buildings. the marker sits on the surface of the paper. because it’s not porous the paper doesn’t suck in lots of the ink and therefore there is not as much pigment resulting in lighter colours than on porous paper but I think it would be interesting and possibly the most enjoyable medium to colour these covers with. But test yourself before committing as you may prefer something else.

        Hi Peta,

Thank you. I will try the Tombows, very discretely,on the back page. It’s something I didn’t think of since I usually only use them in my watercolor journals.

    Hi Big T,
Thanks for letting us know about the problem at Amazon US with the date, etc. for the books. They seem to be having problems lately of all kinds. I shall not order from them to be sure I get good copies in a reasonable amount of time. I have just read Peta’s excellent test results. She did a splendid job of all the tests and evaluatins! Bravo to her.

      Hi Reva,

Yeah, Peta is great. I’m working on the Magical City for now. I can’t seem to stop. I’ve already done 3 pages and am working on a fourth (an upside to insomnia). I hope my obsession with it wanes soon because I have Legendary Landscapes waiting for attention and a whole stack of other books including Johanna Basford’s. I really should be working on my own arts and crafts projects too.

    Hi Big T.
My goodness you certainly have accomplished so much in a short time! Are the pages you have colored finished or do you have some last minute touches to do? It is hard when you get started on this kind of artwork to go to your own completely original work.
Although I have done a variety of things up until now, at present I am at the beginning of the concepts of coloring and working with pencils. I am waiting for some deliveries and have things I will be ordering and I am really looking forward to getting to work on these new projects.
When you are ready you will get back to work on your own projects. I believe that when we are away from things much is happening is our subconscious and when we get back to work, we will be surprised how much we are ready because of the pause. And of course you are coloring and that too is part of your artistic self.
    Best,
    Reva

Brilliant thanks for sharing this, but it is thoroughly deserved. You work so hard supporting artists in their work and producing professional videos which are invaluable to us all. Hope you are successful getting the original rectified, please post and let us know, take care.

I was gonna ask if you preordered the Magical Journey.. Ugh… I think this post answered that question!! An Original from the artist??? What a wonderful gift. I wouldn’t color that original! Maybe make copies and do it that way??? These coloring books are going to be collectors items one day. Especially ones with no coloring is done, mint condition. Seems like many colle tables are from items that were expected to get wear and tear. Like baseball cards and toys! What a wonderful gift!!!

    Hi Peta.
Have you gotten The Magical Journey yet? Saw the book in my local bookstore, and its a pretty cool book, wanted to buy it and decided not to since i already have more books then i need in my house then i could colour. But yet i notice the paper use on UK version of The magical Journey seems to be slightly thinner then then UK version The Magical City.

Hi Nido. Not yet. My versions of Lizzie’s books are printed in Australia and I’ve learned that the paper quality is superior to the UK version. Australia won’t be printing the book until August so I’m waiting on that version.

Well, i guess i will wait and compare the paper quality of the UK version to Taiwan version.

By the way, seems like Book Depository is having a major price drop for some of their colouring including those by Richard Merritt which some going as much as 40% to 50% off. And Imagimorphia is going at $12.50 AUD.
